Ghana Ladies complete double over South Africa
Ghana’s national U-20 women’s team booked their place at the final round of the continental qualifiers of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, Japan 2012, after a 3-0 thrashing of South Africa on Saturday in Accra.
Goals from Priscilla Saahene, Jane Ayieam and Elizabeth Addo ensured the Black Princesses advanced 5-0 on aggregate after a 2-0 win in the reverse fixture in Johannesburg a fortnight ago.
The visiting South Africans gave a good account of themselves but failed when it mattered most by failing to hit the back of the net.
The hosts were up on 11 minutes through Saahene, with a shot from a free-kick that beat South African goalie Kaylin Swart from 25-yards.
The Basetsena responded well with Regina Mogolola, Alice Khoza and Maphuthi Manamela leading raids upfront in their quest for the equalizer.
Their hopes were dashed when the Ghanaians doubled the lead on 65 minutes through substitute Ayieam courtesy a superb header from a cross on the flanks.
Seven minutes later, Addo who scored the in first leg sealed victory by scoring from the spot after Ayieam was fouled in the vital area.
Ghana will face either Tunisia or Kenya at the final round to determine one of the two slots allotted the continent.
The final tournament will take place from 18 August to 9 September, 2012 in Japan.
