Falconets qualify for 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria made certain of their sixth appearance at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after beating DR Congo 3-0 in the second leg of the final round qualifier on Saturday in Kinshasa.

The Falconets, who have participated in all five previous editions of the global tourney qualified for the 2012 edition 7-0 on aggregate after a 4-0 victory in the first leg held in Abeokuta a fortnight ago. The West Africans remain the only African team to have participated at every edition of the biennial championships since the maiden tournament in 2002 in Canada.

The visitors scored all three goals in the first half, killing yet again the dreams of the Congolese who bowed out at the same two years ago.

On eight minutes, Ngozi Okobi broke the deadlock to stun the crowd at the Stade des Martyrs in the Congolese capital. Five minutes later, striker Desire Oparanozie doubled the lead, making matters worse for the hosts.

As the hosts warmed themselves into the game, Francisca Ordega added to their woes with the third goal courtesy a stunning shot and took her tally to four goals in the qualifying campaign.

The second half produced no goal as the defensive approach of the Congolese worked their favour. However, their hopes of a consolation remained a dream as they fumbled with the countable chances that came their way.

Nigeria and Ghana will represent Africa at the global championship scheduled for 19 August to 8 September in Japan.
