Gyan announces return to Ghana national team
Striker Asamoah Gyan, who in February decided to stay away temporarily from the national team, has announced on the website of the Ghanaian Football Association (GFA) his imminent return. « There is no problem. I was only misunderstood regarding my withdrawal from the national team, » said Asamoah Gyan.
Gyan insisted that it was necessary for him to withdraw in order to refocus.
« It was important for me to withdraw. I had to take a respite in order to rebuild my morale. In my letter to the Federation I indicated that my decision to leave was not final , » said Gyan. «So, announcement of my return could come at any time, » he concluded.
Gyan justified his withdrawal from the national team on February 18 by indicating that he was psychologically troubled by the two penalties he missed at the 2010 World Cup and the 2010 Nations Cup and had asked Ghanaians to help him to come back to the team.
« I would like to have the prayers and support of Ghanaians to help me come back and serve my country with renewed energy. I love playing for my country and without my country I would not have been who I am today, » wrote the Al Ain player of the United Arab Emirates, in a communique published by the Ghanaian federation.
Gyan missed a penalty in the last seconds of the quarter final of the 2012 World Cup in a match which The Black Stars eventually lost on penalties to Uruguay. He missed another penalty in the semi-final of the 2012 AFCON against Zambia a team went on to win the competition.
The Ghanaian centre forward thus became the subject of scarthing criticisms for the se two crucial penalty misses.
