Interclube squeeze through via Manucho goal

Angolan club side Interclube qualified for the group stage of the Confederation Cup after defeating visiting Zimbabwean side Dynamos by a slender 1-0 score in the second leg of the competition. Manucho Barros was the man to score the all important goal during the match played at the 22 Junho Stadium, in Luanda.

The teams started off well both fully aware that a goal would boast their chances after the first leg ended up in a goalless draw, a fortnight ago in Harare, Zimbabwe.  Interclube pressed more as the game grew on while Dynamos seemed content to try and catch the home side on counter attacks. The scenario made the hosts tread cautiously but they were still the more enterprising of the two sides. Interclube were duly rewarded on 36th minute when Manucho Barros scored the only goal of the match.

After the goal, both teams seemed to be even more cautious with Interclube  playing to  contain and protect their lead while  Dynamos went on to play in the hope of scoring and  getting a  draw that would have seen them through.

The pattern went on like this for the rest of the game. It could have been different had the visitors been more composed and clinical upfront but the Zimbabweans lacked the killer punch and anything that got through Interclube goalkeeper Mario was able to deal with. As for the home side the Bernardino Pedroto coach team chose to play it safe after scoring and elected to defend instead of increasing the score line.

It petered out in that fashion and Interclube qualified to the group stage of the Orange CAF Confederation Cup just like they did last year where they went on to reach the semi-finals.
Interclube’s Bernardino Pedroto said after the match “We won because we had more concentration. It was difficult to win, but we got the more important goal and have now qualified. "
