Russian Hacker Suspected of Targeting Amazon.com Arrested
A 25-year-old Russian man suspected in the cyber attacks on Amazon.com was arrested this week in Cyprus, where he awaits possible extradition to the U.S., the U.S. Attorney's office announced Thursday.
Dmitry Zubakha of Moscow was indicted in May 2011 for two denial of service attacks on the online retailer. The man also conducted similar attacks in June 2008 on Priceline.com and eBay, according to the indictment, which was opened Thursday by U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan.
On June 6 and June 9, 2008, Zubakha allegedly spearheaded distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks against Amazon, disrupting the site for more than four hours while the company scrambled to clear the botnet.
Zubakha is thought to have involved a co-conspirator in the process, Sergey Logashov; the two celebrated the attacks by claiming credit in hacker forums.
A number of charges rained down on Zubakha, including conspiracy to intentionally cause damage without authorization to a protected computer and two counts of intentionally causing damage to a protected computer resulting in a loss of more than $5,000, as well as possession of 15 or more unauthorized access devices.
