Research in Motion successfully fends off Kodak patent challenge

IRVING, Texas - Research in Motion (TSX:RIM) says the U.S. International Trade Commission has rejected a patent challenge launched by Kodak.

Kodak filed a complaint against RIM in 2010 alleging the smartphone's camera capable products infringed on Kodak's patent.

A RIM news release issued Friday night says the Waterloo, Ont., company has learned the trade commission has terminated its investigation and determined Kodak's patent for electronic cameras is invalid.

RIM's vice-president of litigation, Barbara Parvis, says she is pleased with the decision.

She says RIM respects the valid intellectual property rights of other companies, but will vigorously defend itself against improper claims.

Kodak could have received up to US$1 billion in fees if it had won.

The Rochester, N.Y., based company has been scrambling to redefine itself in digital photography and printing as photographic film sales shrivel.
