Tanzanian clubs in Cecafa finals today

Defending Champions Young Africans and debutant Azam FC clash this Saturday afternoon in an all-Tanzanian Cecafa-Kagame cup final after winning their last semi-final matches against APR and Vita Club on Thursday respectively.

Yanga obtained victory through a Ugandan International Hamis Kiiza who notched their sole goal in the 10th minute of the added time. Kiiza chested- in a beautiful cross from teammate Haruna Niyonzima to throw the Yanga fans into wild celebrations. The game was played for 120 minutes. They have celebrated with a red card at hand as Kenyan Referee Anthony Ogwayo sent off Godfrey Taita after a second caution.

Yanga beat Dar es Salaam arch rivals Simba SC 1-0 in last year’s final also held at the magnificent and modern 60,000 seat National Stadium that welcomes a guaranteed large crowd of not only very happy Yanga and Azam supporters but also from Simba who will be hoping their sworn enemies fall to Azam.

If Yanga win, it will be their fifth title in the event inaugurated in 1974, but still one short of the record six of Simba. Azam are a young club in Tanzania top-flight club football, just six years-old, but of late a force that has effectively challenged the traditional dominance of Yanga and Simba.

Eliminated, include teams of the pedigree of AS Vita Club of DR Congo, the 1973 African champions who are guests this year. Azam stopped the Congolese with two great goals from striker John Bocco and Mrisho Ngassa in the 2-1 semi-final victory. Yanga outlasted Rwanda’s APR 1-0 in the other semi.
Other teams that fell on the wayside included Uganda Revenue Authority [URA] who were awesome in the group stages, Atletico Olympique and Mafunzo of Zanzibar. Surprise flops were Kenya champions and five-time Kagame Cup winners, Tusker, who failed to go beyond the group stages.
The bronze medal match pitting APR and AS Vita Club at 1pm precede the final. The Cup winners will walk away with USD 30.000 as the second placed side takes home USD 20.000 and another USD 10.000 goes to the third placed club.
